Escape with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Do you ever find a show that makes you feel good just from watching it? Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is a show like that but with a twist. You will come to care about the main character, Miriam “Midge” Maisel and her family, and it is not all smooth sailing for this wife, mother and comedienne.
One of the elements of good self-care is finding things that genuinely provide a good laugh or escape from daily problems as needed. This isn’t an escape from your daily life, just a quick way to regroup at the end of a long day.
Five Reasons to Watch “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
(1) Fantastic acting
Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam Maisel is a force to be reckoned with on the show. She plays Miriam with gusto and isn’t afraid to do whatever it takes to get the laughs. She switches from dramatic to comedic scenes with ease and is one of the main reasons this show is so binge-worthy.
(2) Chemistry between the lead actors
The chemistry between Miriam and her husband, Joel played by Michael Zegen, is fun to watch. Joel is a character who is hard to like initially, but he grows on you and you see what Miriam must have seen in him. Later in the show, Miriam is paired with another actor, Zachary Levi who plays Benjamin. Zachary Levi previously acted in the show “Chuck” and he does a great job here as well. No spoilers, you will just have to watch the show to find out more on how this all fits together.
(3) Supporting cast
Alex Borstein plays Susie Myerson, who becomes Miriam’s manager. Miriam and Susie come from totally different backgrounds yet they learn to work well together and become friends. Alex is wonderful to watch as an actress. She may be small in stature, but she can certainly hold her own in any scene. She has great timing and the rapport between her and Miriam is priceless. Miriam’s father, Abe Weissman, is played by Tony Shalhoub and he does a great job with the rest of the cast bringing Miriam’s family to life.
(4) The sets and costumes
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is set in 1950’s Manhattan. The music of the era featuring Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Dean Martin, Doris Day, and The Chordettes with songs like “Pink Shoe Laces”, sweeps you away into a different time. The main action takes place in the Weissman’s apartment building, the club she performs at, and other locations all decked out in their 1950’s finery. The most eye catching aspect is Miriam’s wardrobe. She is usually dressed in the height of what was then fashionable and it can almost make you long for the days of girdles – if that is the end result. (Just kidding, girdles sound like torture!)
(5) The writing
Last but not least, the show was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino who brought us “Gilmore Girls”. This show has the same fast-paced dialogue featured in “Gilmore Girls” and is a treat to your ears, even if it must be a nightmare for the actors. The rapid fire, smart and funny dialogue makes for a very quick hour of TV.
If you are looking for a new show to binge on Amazon Prime, look no further. Amazon Prime has Seasons One and Two available for Prime Members. One word of warning, this show is rated Mature for language and sexual situations, so this is not a show to watch with your kids. However, it is a fun and sometimes delightful way to spend less than an hour of your entertainment time.
