Do you ever need an escape from your day to day worries? Most of us do, and Escape Pods provide the perfect vehicle to do this. Escape Pods are anything that take you outside of your current head space and transport you somewhere else. My favorite methods for doing this are usually TV shows, Movies, or books. My latest find for a great escape is the movie “The Greatest Showman”.
“The Greatest Showman” stars Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya, and a large supporting cast. One of the singers, Keala Settle, has been on Broadway for many years but you may be hearing her for the first time. Zac Efron and Zendaya, known mostly for their Disney shows and movies are on a new playing field here, but do well.
“The Greatest Showman”, a pet project for Hugh Jackman, was a struggle to get made and took seven years to do so. (You can read more about his journey to do so here in this “Variety” article.) It is lucky for us he succeeded. Hugh Jackman was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for best actor for this movie. He is at the top of his game in this movie -singing, dancing and acting his heart out. For those who only know him from the “Wolverine” and “X-Men” series, his breadth of talent will amaze you. Even if you saw him in “Les Miserables”, he may surprise you.
This movie was inspired by the true story of P.T. Barnum’s rise to fame. Critics complain the movie glosses over the controversial reality of Barnum’s life. However, this is not a documentary and clearly states it is “inspired” by his life. “The Greatest Showman” takes the spirit of what Barnum tried to bring to life and makes a fantastic movie from that inspiration.
All of the songs from this movie are incredibly catchy tune wise. I defy you to listen to them and not have them in your head for the rest of the evening. The lyricists, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul from “La La Land” fame, created eleven songs for this movie. And, their song “This Is Me” from this movie, just won the 2018 Golden Globe Award for best original song for a motion picture.
If you haven’t guessed, this movie is a musical. Some may decide not to watch it because of that fact, but they would miss one of the best feel good movies I’ve seen in a while. My girls (ages 11, 13 and 18) and I absolutely loved this movie. It has a great message of inclusion for all types of people and persevering against all odds. Go see “The Greatest Showman” and thank me later!
