Capsule Wardrobe – 6 Reasons to Try One Today

Have you ever thought about trying a capsule wardrobe service or product?  I tried out my first one several years ago (GYPO – links below) and I’m now hooked.  There are so many reasons why trying out a capsule wardrobe makes sense.  Here are the main reasons why it can work for you.

Reasons to Give a Capsule Wardrobe a Try

Capsule wardrobes are easy to use

A capsule wardrobe is a list of items from different categories (tops, bottoms, layers, shoes and accessories) and gives you a plan for a month or so.  You can mix and match the items in lots of ways to create at least 30 outfits (in the case of GYPO).  The plan makes it so easy to get dressed in the morning!

They make you feel more confident and are good for self-care

When you feel good about the clothes you are wearing, you tend to operate throughout your life with more confidence.  You may have gone a time or two to the store dressed in something you later regretted, I know I have.  (And, it seems, I run into everyone I know when I don’t want to. Right?)

In fact, Alison Lumbatis, the founder of GYPO had this to say about clothes as self-care;  “Years ago I stumbled across the power of getting dressed and what it can do for confidence. Turns out research backs this theory up.  The way we feel about ourselves is directly tied to our appearance and that’s anything but superficial. This is actually really good news because it means that external changes can lead to powerful internal shifts.”   If you lack confidence in this area, knowing you have someone like Alison helping you put outfits together, can make you feel like a million bucks.

Capsule wardrobes can save you money

The idea with a capsule wardrobe and GYPO in particular, is that over time you save money.  You save money because every year similar items are used with just a few “new” trendy items to make your closet feel like new.  Unless your weight fluctuates a lot, you should be able to wear these items over many seasons and years.

For the fun and community

The fun feeling of Christmas now comes 4 times a year to my house because I get a shopping list for each season.  I just received the Fall Version and the process goes like this:

  1. Login to site
  2. Print out shopping list and outfit list
  3. Clean out closet for this season
  4. See what I have that fits the lists in item number 2
  5. Make a small shopping list of anything missing, that doesn’t fit or is damaged from the list
  6. Create outfits in the comfort of my home
  7. Take pictures of outfits on my phone to have for reference
  8. Join this season’s Facebook group for inspiration and to have any questions answered

The community aspect is one of the parts I hadn’t anticipated.  The women in the Facebook group are very supportive and work to build each other up rather than tear each other down.  They are also great at helping you find substitutions or tell you if something works or not.

Capsule wardrobes are good for the environment

Capsule wardrobes aren’t just good for making your life easier, they are also good for the environment.  Fashion actually has an impact on the environment.  “Fast Fashion” in particular is bad for the environment.  You can read more about what you can do to reduce your impact on the environment through your clothing choices in this article “How Can We Reduce Our Fashion Environmental Impact“.

It describes why “disposable” fashion is bad for the environment and ways you can reduce your carbon footprint in this area.  Capsule wardrobes are good from the standpoint of reusing the same clothing items for multiple seasons and years.  By reusing items, it is less cost to you and better for the planet overall.

You can stay sane with an organized system

Between the online documents, the printouts, having it on your phone, or adding the items to an app like Stylebook, you have a very organized closet.  One of my favorite aspects of using a capsule wardrobe is having my outfits ready to go in my closet so I don’t have to think about what to wear in the morning.

I’m one of those people who has other things I’d like to think about rather than what to wear everyday.  The idea I can look put together easily is a huge bonus!  Stylebook and the nice printable calendars from GYPO have made it so easy for me to know what I have and how it goes together.  Packing for trips is now 10 times easier too!

Try A Capsule Wardrobe for Yourself

Are you ready to take a leap into the future?  This link to the Style Challenges by GYPO will take you to the current style challenges to help you build your first capsule wardrobe.  You can sign up for a season first and see how you like it.  I started small with one season and then decided I’d saved enough money to go the annual route the next time.  My days of going out and buying stand alone outfits that don’t go with anything else in my closet are thankfully over!
