Fun, Fashion and Function! A Wardrobe that Works for You

How to Find A Capsule Wardrobe that Works for You

Telling you this will probably date me. but I remember going to J.C. Penney’s and shopping for my wardrobe with my Mom and younger brother.  We found some cute kid’s clothes called Garanimals* with matching animals for the tops and bottoms – the elephant top goes with the elephant bottoms, etc.

I thought it was brilliant for my fashion challenged self and I’ve been yearning for something like it ever since.  I mean how nice would it be to walk into an adult store and find items already determined to go with other items and marked as such?

New Wardrobe Box Service – To Stitch Fix with Love

The good news is I haven’t found a store like that, but I have found a service that does!  You may have heard of Stitch Fix by now.

Every few months I look forward to receiving a box filled with cute clothes and with instructions on ways to wear the clothes.   You will receive around five items (and you can specify what types of items you would like to get) and you can try them on in the comfort of your own home with your other clothes.

You don’t have to buy any of the items if you don’t like them.  But, if you do buy something, they keep track and will tell you this shirt would look great with the pants you bought in this Fix!

Stitch Fix also will give you two ideas in pictures for other ways to wear each clothing item.  The pieces may be a bit more than I would like to pay normally, but it saves me money in the long run by not having a closet full of items that don’t go with anything else.

Left to my own devices, I tend to pick a bunch of random things that don’t work together.  They also have my body type on file and send me items that are the best choice for my body shape.  This has also helped me more than I can say!  If you decide to try out Stitch Fix, you can always use my referral page and I will receive a small credit.   Thank you! 🙂

Capsule Wardrobe Outfit Ideas, Anyone?

Another option if you feel like your fashion needs a shakeup (and everyone’s does after a period of time) is to create a capsule wardrobe.   According to the Harper Collins Dictionary, a Capsule Wardrobe is “a collection of clothes and accessories that includes only items considered essential.”

If you would like to experiment with the idea of a capsule wardrobe, I’ve found an excellent book on this subject called “The Curated Closet” by Anuschka Rees.   There is excellent information and links on her blog for resources to build a capsule wardrobe among other fashion advice.

Style Challenges for Capsule Wardrobe Outfit Ideas

If you want to try another source, you can also check out getyourprettyon.com, where she has fashion advice on creating a capsule wardrobe for different seasons and roles in life.  Each capsule wardrobe has a list of items and multiple links (options) for each item from inexpensive (Old Navy/Target) to more expensive (Nordstrom/Macy’s).

She also provides you with outfit cards for the items and different ways to wear the items as well.  She even suggests you should always shop from your closet first (I agree!) and make substitutions as needed before you go out and buy anything.  It is a fun, no-brainer way to spruce up your wardrobe and give you permission to weed out the items that just aren’t working in your closet anymore.

So Many Options!

So, there you have three options for ways to make your wardrobe work for you again.  I know investing in clothes with either your time or money can seem frivolous to some, but when you feel good about what you are wearing you tend to feel better about yourself.

You know this is true if you think back to any big occasion where you get “dressed up” or the new (or new to you) clothes worn on the first day of school.  You just feel different and hold yourself with more confidence.

Enjoy researching your options and know you don’t have to spend a dime on your wardrobe if you can’t or don’t want to – you may already have the pieces you need in your closet.  You just need a little inspiration on new ways to wear them.  Happy hunting for those outfits, my friend!

*Side note – I did some research and they still sell Garanimals for kids up to size 5T!  I wish I would have known this for my kids!

You can get a box of the clothes that go together for $35.00 and make over 15 outfits.  And, they even give you the cheat sheet for it now.   I’m so jealous.
